Findings from a new poll conducted by an online marketing solutions provider for real estate agents and consumers found home sellers fare 120 percent better in getting their home sold using a real estate agent than selling on their own.

HomeGain recently surveyed 400 homeowners during the period of July 31st to August 10th asking them whether or not they used an agent to sell their home. Seventy-nine percent said they used an agent, while 41 percent tried to sell their home on their own. Roughly half of the ones who tried to sell on their own eventually sought the help of an agent.

What is interesting is of those who tried to sell on their own, only 30 percent were successful. It would be great if we could see some stats to see if the homeowners who sold on their own made less money than those who used an agent, as I'm sure is the case just because of limited exposure.

A good agent can also give you the most up-to-date information, has experience negotiating and can guide you through the extensive paperwork and closing.

The number of FSBO (for sale by owner) have also declined in recent years, which is no surprise due to the declining market. The National Association of Realtors did a study that showed the average FSBO home that sold in the period from 1991 to 2011 was $150,000, while the average home sold by an agent was $215,000.

However, keep in mind that not all agents are the same. The average agent in South Florida sells four homes a year, while the Novello Group sells more than 100 homes every year.
